Hisao Okawa celebrates his 30th anniversary living in New Zealand with an exhibition of his life's work. Okawa previously had a 16-year-long career as a senior lecturer at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design, where he taught painting, drawing and Japanese brush work from 1986 - 2002.

Okawa employs traditional Japanese styles and mediums in his work. His 1999 'Aotearoa' series incorporates rock powder, mixed paints and fabric in stylized depictions of the atmospheric New Zealand landscape. In contrast, his Still Life series draw heavily from realism and are painted using Japanese watercolour washes on rice paper. Also exhibited are a number of charcoal drawings of classical subjects. The diversity in Okawa's work reflects a lifetime of different cultural influences and a keen exploration of Japanese traditions in a Kiwi context.

Okawa's work is held in private collections in Jordan, Malaysia, Japan and New Zealand. He has traveled extensively and exhibited in solo and group shows in Australia, Thailand, Vienna and France.

The opening of Okawa's show is on Saturday 6th Febuary at 6-8pm.
