The suggestion of reality underscores all of Saskia Minoli’s paintings, which are populated with subjects inspired from everyday life. This tendency towards realism is offset by her gestural approach to form and colour; Minoli’s style has become visibly more expressionistic as it has progressed. Energetic brushwork transforms the surfaces of her paintings into textural landscapes, and the edges of her subjects dissolve into frenetic, hazily painted backgrounds. 

For many years Amsterdam-based Minoli has been established as a well-known as a painter of horses: she is fascinated and inspired by their beauty, power and agility. However, these animals are by far not her only subject. In the summertime, Minoli tends to find her inspiration in the beautiful Dutch landscape and cityscapes. The dunes, the sea and wind mills are seen repeatedly in her body of work. 

Minoli’s paintings are predominantly created with acrylic on canvas, but the artist does not shy away from unconventional materials such as sand and beeswax. Her beloved drawings of the nude female form have long been made with reed pen and ink; these sketches are similar to another technique she enjoys, Japanese ‘sumi-e’ or ink wash painting.

Recently Minoli completed a paintings series of nudes, which have drawn comparisons to the work of Post-Impressionist Pierre Bonnard.

Minoli has tried her hand at numerous genres, and intends to continue exploring. Her ability to find something that holds her interest in each new subject is a testament to her innovative spirit. 

Minoli has kept up a busy schedule of group and solo shows throughout the Netherlands since 2003.
